Today probably ranks in the top 10 best days of my life.
This morning, our group ventured into the main part of London and went on a bike tour of the city. It was such a beautiful day; the weather was absolutely perfect! At the beginning, none of us were super excited to ride bikes for four hours, but by the end, I was so happy that we did it! We rode through all the Royal Parks (Kensington, Hyde, and St. James), then down to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and so many other major sites. It was incredible to be standing in front of the queen’s home, or outside of Will and Kate’s palace. Those were definitely two highlights of the day for me. As we rode our bikes through Kensington Park, I knew the name sounded familiar, but even our tour guide waited until the end of his speech to tell us Will and Kate lived in the palace and were probably inside! When we arrived at Buckingham, the changing of the guards was happening, so we got to see lots of horses and lots of soldiers. Outside the palace was packed, but Savannah, Michaela and I managed to walk pretty close to it! Listening to our British tour guide was a great aspect of the tour. He succeeded in making the history of every stop interesting, but that could’ve just been his accent. I learned and saw so much today!
We had most of the afternoon and night left to ourselves, so my group decided to take the tube down to the London Bridge. It took a long time and a lot of extra walking to figure out that the bridge we actually wanted to see was Tower Bridge. There was a lot of exercise today, needless to say. Tower Bridge was gorgeous, though, and worth the wait. The architecture, the colors, and the view. After dinner, we girls embraced the tourist life and went out souvenir shopping, then successfully took the tube home by ourselves! We were very proud.
It was a tiring day, but so worth it. Seeing these amazing pieces of British history makes me feel so far away from home, but so lucky at the same time. I never thought I would get the chance to do this…it was such a great day! More pictures to come later this week!
